# Linguistics and TTS

> Why TTS is hard: the one-to-many problem in linguistics and how Rime gives you customization controls.

Synthesizing realistic speech is difficult largely because of the **one-to-many problem** in linguistics: one text string corresponds to infinitely many possible acoustic realizations. The same words can differ in pronunciation, timing, and emphasis, and speakers sometimes change them on purpose for effect.

Rime's voices choose a default realization, so you don't have to specify one. When your use case needs a different reading, Mist v3 lets you adjust it at a low level:

* [Homographs](/docs/homographs): choose which pronunciation a word such as *produce* gets, on English Mist v3.
* [Custom pauses](/docs/custom-pauses): insert a pause of an exact length in milliseconds, on Mist v3.
* [Custom pronunciation](/docs/custom-pronunciation): write a word's pronunciation as phonemes in Rime's phonetic alphabet, on English Mist v3.
