# Spanish phonemes

> Look up the X-SAMPA phonemes that Coda accepts in a Spanish custom lexicon. This reference covers the rules for Spanish, each phoneme's IPA symbol, and example words.

Use these phonemes in a pronunciation for a Spanish (`es`) request. Spanish has 24 phonemes, as spoken in Latin America. The inventory has no `T`, so write the `z` and soft `c` in `zapato` and `gracias` as `s`. This lexicon entry makes Coda pronounce the invented brand name `Velkora`:

## Rules for Spanish

* Mark one primary stress with `"`, whether or not the spelling carries an accent mark: `Joaquín` is `x o . a . " k i n`.
* `4` is the tap in `pero` and `r` is the trill in `perro`.
* Spanish has no reduced vowel, so any of the five vowels can carry stress.
* Adjacent vowels in separate syllables need a `.` between them. In a diphthong, write the weak vowel as the glide `j` or `w`: `gracias` is `" g 4 a . s j a s`.
