# French phonemes

> Look up the X-SAMPA phonemes that Coda accepts in a French custom lexicon. This reference covers the rules for French, each phoneme's IPA symbol, and example words.

Use these phonemes in a pronunciation for a French (`fr`) request. French has 35 phonemes, as spoken in France. See [Phoneme control](https://docs.rime.ai/platform/phoneme-control) for the format and how to send a lexicon.

This lexicon entry makes Coda pronounce the invented brand name `Velkora`:

## Rules for French

* French has no lexical stress, so a French pronunciation never contains `"` or `%`. The API rejects one that does with `unexpected-stress`. `Renault` is `R @ . n o`.
* Nasal vowels are single phonemes written with `~`: `a~`, `E~`, and `o~`.
* `R` is the French uvular r. `H` is the glide in `nuit`.
