# Italian phonemes

> Look up the X-SAMPA phonemes that Coda accepts in an Italian custom lexicon. This reference covers the rules for Italian, each phoneme's IPA symbol, and example words.

Use these phonemes in a pronunciation for an Italian (`it`) request. Italian has 30 phonemes, as spoken in Italy. See [Phoneme control](/platform/phoneme-control) for the format and how to send a lexicon.

This lexicon entry makes Coda pronounce the invented brand name `Velkora`:

## Rules for Italian

* Mark one primary stress with `"`.
* Write a double consonant as two phonemes split across a syllable boundary: `gnocchi` is `" J O k . k i`. The API rejects two identical consonants within one syllable with `dup-consonant`.
* Open `E` and `O` are distinct phonemes from closed `e` and `o`.
* `J` is the `gn` in `gnocchi` and `L` is the `gli` in `figlio`. Affricates `ts`, `dz`, `tS`, and `dZ` are single phonemes.
