# Portuguese phonemes

> Look up the X-SAMPA phonemes that Coda accepts in a Portuguese custom lexicon. This reference covers the rules for Portuguese, each phoneme's IPA symbol, and example words.

Use these phonemes in a pronunciation for a Portuguese (`pt`) request. Portuguese has 36 phonemes, as spoken in Brazil. See [Phoneme control](https://docs.rime.ai/platform/phoneme-control) for the format and how to send a lexicon.

This lexicon entry makes Coda pronounce the invented brand name `Velkora`:

## Rules for Portuguese

* Mark one primary stress with `"`: `João` is `Z o . " a~ w`.
* Nasal vowels are single phonemes written with `~`: `a~`, `e~`, `i~`, `o~`, and `u~`.
* `6` is the reduced vowel (the final vowel in `casa`). Do not stress it when a full vowel in the word could carry the stress.
* `4` is the tap in `caro` and `R` is the strong r in `carro`. A syllable-final `l` is usually spoken as the glide `w`, as in `Velkora` above.
